It is with much excitement that I invite you to participate in our 34th annual Johnstown YMCA Marathon and 10K event. Due to the loss of major sponsors this year's race was almost cancelled. Through the determination of a fellow marathon participant and local businessman Howard Bernstein and his fight to save this long standing Johnstown tradition, many local businesses and individuals have stepped up to support our event and the YMCA. To everyone we are eternally grateful. Individually they made a difference but together made an impact and the race goes on.
This year's race includes:
- Marathon
- Half Marathon (NEW THIS YEAR!)
- 10K Race
- 10K Corporate Challenge
- 5K Fun Walk/Run (NEW THIS YEAR!)
- Relay Team Competition
- Adaptive Cycling Divisions
- NFL Punt, Pass & Kick
- Lollipop Race
- And Pre-Race Spaghetti Dinner, on October 3rd.
In addition, this year's event is the start of a relationship between race and cause. The 2009 race will benefit the SUDC (Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood) Program by promoting and creating awareness of the need for research and support of families affected by SUDC. This year's race is dedicated to Jordann Rose Orosz (5/5/2003 - 8/31/2005) and the many other children gone to soon. Support SUDC at www.sudc.org.
Thank you and welcome,
Sharon L. Jones,
YMCA Executive Director
The SUDC Program was created to be a centralized resource for those affected by a sudden unexpected death in childhood, whose cause left undetermined, unclear or unexplained. We are the only organization worldwide devoted solely to the needs of families and professionals touched by unexplained death in childhood.
"Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the sudden unexpected death of a child over the age of 12 months, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation, is conducted." (Krouse et al. 2005)
